Greater Youth Sports Association Receives Black History Month Community Recognition

Las Vegas, NV — The Greater Youth Sports Association (GYSA) is honored to share that our organization Founder Devonte Woodson has been recognized by the Board of County Commissioners during their Black History Month ceremony for our ongoing commitment to youth development and community impact.

This recognition celebrates the collective effort of our students, families, school partners, coaches, and community supporters who make our programs possible each season. While the award was presented to our Executive Director, Devonte Woodson, it represents the work of an entire community committed to creating positive pathways for youth.

Our Beginning

GYSA began with a simple observation at a title 1 school.

While teaching physical education, our founder noticed a student struggling behaviorally and academically — not because of a lack of ability, but a lack of connection. To create a positive outlet, a small after-school soccer clinic was organized for the student.

More than 150 children attended.

That moment revealed a larger need: students across the community were eager for structured opportunities, mentorship, and belonging. From that single clinic, the Greater Youth Sports Association was created to ensure youth could access sports and guidance directly within their school environments.

Our Mission in Action

GYSA operates school-integrated youth sports and mentorship programs designed to serve the whole child. By partnering with schools and community centers, students can participate without financial or transportation barriers.

Our programs emphasize:

  1. Positive mentorship and role models

  2. Character and leadership development

  3. Accountability and teamwork

  4. Safe after-school engagement

  5. Family and community connection

For many participants, GYSA is their first team, first coach, and first structured extracurricular experience.

Community Impact

Through year-round programming, GYSA has helped provide students with consistent, positive environments during after-school hours — a critical time for youth development.

We have seen students:

  1. Improve school engagement and attendance

  2. Build confidence and leadership skills

  3. Strengthen peer relationships

  4. Develop discipline and responsibility

Most importantly, students gain a sense of belonging.

Black History Month Significance

Black History Month recognizes individuals and organizations working to expand opportunity and access within their communities. GYSA’s mission aligns with this legacy by ensuring youth — regardless of background or income — have access to structured programs, mentorship, and supportive environments.

Sports serve as the entry point, but the outcome is personal growth, community connection, and future direction.

Gratitude

GYSA thanks the Board of County Commissioners for this recognition and extends appreciation to:

  1. School administrators and educators

  2. Coaches and volunteers

  3. Community partners and sponsors

  4. Parents and guardians

  5. And the students who inspire the work every day

Moving Forward

This recognition strengthens our commitment to expanding access to youth programming and continuing partnerships that support children both on and off the court.

Our goal remains simple:

Every child deserves a safe place to grow, compete, and belong.
